Leigh Hockey Club – keeping it in the family with Buddle Venues
“We have to ask Grandad to calm down sometimes, he’s in his 70’s and still wants to umpire the games and run the line – he loves it!”
Matt Brunt plays for Leigh Hockey Club in the North West Hockey League. 22 years old and working in IT by day, his passion for hockey comes thanks to the influence of his grandad Ray Brunt. Founding the club decades ago and having had all his owns sons play for the team at one point or other, Ray encouraged his grandson Matt to take up the sport when he was aged just 13 and he’s been hooked ever since.
“The whole club is a huge family thing for us. Me, my dad and my uncle are all involved in the team and Grandad still comes down when he can. I’ve taken over as treasurer and captain of the team now but we all chip-in to help run things”.
Matt and his team-mates faced a real challenge in August when – with only two weeks to go until the hockey season was due to start – the club had been unable to book a local venue for their homes fixtures, with most still being closed due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. That was until Buddle Venues began marketing the spaces available for hire at St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Wigan.
“To receive the email from Buddle Venues saying we could book a pitch with them was a massive relief as we would’ve been struggling to take part in the league this season if we hadn’t been able to book the astro-turf pitch at St. Mary’s” said Matt.
“The Buddle Venues team are always helpful and the booking process was quick and simple. The way I can pay online means it’s really easy to track where we’re up to with payments and I can bin the old chequebook too!”
Leigh Hockey Club is a classic community group that we’re proud to work with, allowing local people – from 22 year old grandsons to 70 year old grandads! – to stay active and follow their passions at a venue that works for them.
